Heart Breaker- Pat Benatar- Estella and Pip

Your love is like a tidal wave, spinning over my head
Drownin' me in your promises, better left unsaid
You're the right kind of dreamer, to release my inner fantasy
The invincible winner, and you know that you were born to be

[Chorus]
You're a heartbreaker
Dream maker, a love taker
Don't you mess around with me
You're a heartbreaker
Dream maker, a love taker
Don't you mess around, no no no

Your love has set my soul on fire, burnin' out of control
You taught me the ways of desire, now it's takin' its toll
You're the right kind of sinner, to release my inner fantasy
The invincible winner, and you know that you were born to be

This song represents the relationship between Estella and Pip, and focuses mainly on Estella's treatment to Pip and other men. Encouraged by Miss. Havisham's words, " Break their hearts," Estella toys with men's hearts and essentially a "heart breaker" as she treats men cruelly by making herself unattainable in the men's eyes. In chapter 38, she demonstrates this by  "entrapping" tailors as she swindles them into thinking they have a chance with her; when really in the end, she ignores and almost "discards" them as their hopes with her are crushed. The lyrics of "Heart Breaker" also demonstrates Estella's attitude toward men, as the lyrics, "You're the right kind of dreamer, to release my inner fantasy" indicates the fact that women like Estella infatuate men with their looks or charm to merely toy with their hopes of love. Also, the lyrics "You taught me the ways of desire, now it's takin' its toll," illustrates how the men were swindled with and were left with their hearts broken, essentially representing the toll they had to pay trying to chase after heart breakers like Estella.

Man of Constant Sorrows- Bob Dylan- Pip

I am a man of constant sorrow
I've seen trouble all my days
I'll say goodbye to Colorado
Where I was born and partly raised.

Your mother says I'm a stranger
My face you'll never see no more
But there's one promise, darling:
I'll see you on God's golden shore.

Through this open world I'm about to ramble
Through ice and snows, sleet and rain
I'm about to ride that morning railroad
Perhaps I'll die on that train.

I'm going back to Colorado
The place that I started from
If I had known how bad you'd treat me honey
I never would have come.

"Man of Constant Sorrows" represents Pip's "Great Expectations, as Colorado in the lyrics represents England, a land where it symbolized Pip's expectations of becoming a gentleman . In the song, Dylan leaves Colorado for his aspirations to become wealthy as he said "I'll see you on God's golden shore," which represented his dreams or being rich and as well as a final parting from his mother as he will see her only when he dies or in heaven, to his mother as a goodbye. Comparing Pip and Bob Dylan, where Pip also desired to leave his homeland to a place where his dreams could come true, never looking back, their situations are very similar.  The song truly symbolizes Pip and his expectations very well. Also, the lines, "If I had known how bad you'd treat me honey I never would have come," represent how Pip's expectations of becoming a gentleman and impressing Estella were crushed as Estella still rejected him as her lover and Pip lived a modest life working at a mercantile firm.
Stay- Rihanna- Miss. Havisham and Compeyson

All along it was a fever
A cold sweat hot-headed believer
I threw my hands in the air, said, "Show me something,"
He said, "If you dare come a little closer."

Round and around and around and around we go
Oh now tell me now tell me now tell me now you know

Not really sure how to feel about it.
Something in the way you move
Makes me feel like I can't live without you.
It takes me all the way.
I want you to stay

It's not much of a life you're living
It's not just something you take – it's given

Round and around and around and around we go
Oh now tell me now tell me now tell me now you know

Not really sure how to feel about it.
Something in the way you move
Makes me feel like I can't live without you.
It takes me all the way.
I want you to stay.

Ooh the reason I hold on
Ooh cause I need this hole gone
Funny you're the broken one but I'm the only one who needed saving
Cause when you never see the light it's hard to know which one of us is caving

Not really sure how to feel about it.
Something in the way you move
Makes me feel like I can't live without you.
It takes me all the way.
I want you to stay, stay.
I want you to stay, oh.

"Stay" is a song about a girl's longing toward a man that has mistreated her in the past. ( AKA Chris Brown and Rihanna) It can represent Miss. Havisham's longing for Compeyson, the man that deceived her of her money and left her at the alter when they were about to be married. She wanted him to "stay" as she wears the wedding dress she was supposed to wear and has the clocks stopped at the time the wedding was supposed to take place; almost as if she wanted time altogether to stop at that moment, when she once believed Compeyson was her one true lover.
The lyrics "Cause when you never see the light it's hard to know which one of us is caving" represents how Miss. Havisham and Compeyson were both "imprisoned" inside, never seeing the light, knowing nothing. Miss. Havisham was in a way "imprisoned" in her house, where she could not emotionally depart the Satis House. Compeyson was imprisoned in jail for his faults. Both had limited information about each other and it was hard to know which one of them was caving, or experiencing a difficult time. Miss. Havisham was rotting away in her wedding dress, unable to move on with her life, not knowing her "dear lover" Compeyson attempted to escape prison and ended up drowning at the end due to his greed and desire to bring Provis to despair.
Lean on Me - Bill Withers - Herbert and Pip

Sometimes in our lives
We all have pain, we all have sorrow
But if we are wise
We know that there's always tomorrow

Lean on me when you're not strong
And I'll be your friend, I'll help you carry on
For it won't be long
'Til I'm gonna need somebody to lean on

Please, swallow your pride
If I have things you need to borrow
For no one can fill those of your needs
That you won't let show

You just call on me, brother, when you need a hand
We all need somebody to lean on
I just might have a problem that you'll understand
We all need somebody to lean on

Lean on me when you're not strong
And I'll be your friend, I'll help you carry on
For it won't be long
'Til I'm gonna need somebody to lean on

You just call on me, brother, when you need a hand
We all need somebody to lean on
I just might have a problem that you'll understand
We all need somebody to lean on

If there is a load
You have to bear that you can't carry
I'm right up the road, I'll share your load
If you just call me

Call me (If you need a friend)
Call me (Call me uh-huh)
Call me (When you need a friend)
Call me (If you ever need a friend)
Call me (Call me)
Call me (Call me)
Call me (Call me)
Call me (Call me)
Call me (If you need a friend)
Call me (Call me)
Call me (Call me)
Call me (Call me)
Call me (Call me)
Call me

The song "Lean on Me" represents the classical friendship where each friend can depend on each other. This song perfectly exemplifies Herbert's and Pip's relationship. They "lean" on each other in hard times and "share each other's load" when they each have a "bear that they can't carry." For example, Pip, through his copious amounts of money and his becoming status of a gentleman, he was able to buy his way to enable Herbert, who was struggling to get a working job, to become partners with a marketing businessman anonymously, acquiring him a career and enough wealth for Herbert to marry his lover, Clara. Herbert returned the favor by saving him from Orlick who was attempting to murder him by retrieving help and officials to arrest Orlick and save Pip. They both looked out for each other as friends, which is symbolized by the lyrics of "Lean on Me."
Somebody I Used to Know- Gotye- Biddy and Pip

[Gotye:]
Now and then I think of when we were together
Like when you said you felt so happy you could die
Told myself that you were right for me
But felt so lonely in your company
But that was love and it's an ache I still remember

You can get addicted to a certain kind of sadness
Like resignation to the end, always the end
So when we found that we could not make sense
Well you said that we would still be friends
But I'll admit that I was glad it was over

But you didn't have to cut me off
Make out like it never happened and that we were nothing
And I don't even need your love
But you treat me like a stranger and that feels so rough
No you didn't have to stoop so low
Have your friends collect your records and then change your number
I guess that I don't need that though
Now you're just somebody that I used to know

Now you're just somebody that I used to know
Now you're just somebody that I used to know

[Kimbra:]
Now and then I think of all the times you screwed me over
But had me believing it was always something that I'd done
But I don't wanna live that way
Reading into every word you say
You said that you could let it go
And I wouldn't catch you hung up on somebody that you used to know

[Gotye:]

[x2]
Somebody
(I used to know)
Somebody
(Now you're just somebody that I used to know)

(I used to know)
(That I used to know)
(I used to know)
Somebody

"Somebody I Used to Know" represents Biddy's perspective in her relationship with Pip. After Pip came back from London, acquiring his becoming status of a gentleman, Pip treated Biddy as a simple country girl, looking down upon her, despite the memories they had together and Biddy's kindness, making it sound as if " it never happened and they were nothing". In this situation, Biddy felt cut off by a loving person "she used to know."  Also, the lyrics, ''But you treat me like a stranger and that feels so rough," symbolizes Pip's attitude toward Biddy, as he became snobbish and acted superior to his country surroundings and to Biddy herself, acting as if he was a total stranger of the country he once lived in .

Want U Back- Cher Lloyd- Pip's jealousy toward Biddy and Joe

Uh!
Mmm, yeah.
La la la la laaa
Uh!

Hey, boy you never had much game
Thought I needed to upgrade
So I went and walked away way way
Uh
Now, I see you've been hanging out
With that other girl in town
Looking like a pair of clowns clowns clowns
Uh

Remember all the things that you and I did first?
And now you're doing them with her
Remember all the things that you and I did first?
You got me, got me like this
Uh
And now you're taking her to every restaurant
And everywhere we went, come on!
And now you're taking her to every restaurant
You got me, got me like this
Uh

Boy you can say anything you wanna
I don't give a shh, no one else can have ya
I want you back
I want you back
Wa-want you, want you back
Uh
I broke it off thinking you'd be cryin'
Now I feel like shh looking at you flyin'
I want you back
I want you back
Wa-want you, want you back
Uh

Please, this ain't even jealousy (jealousy)
She ain't got a thing on me (a thing on me)
Tryin' to rock them ugly jeans jeans jeans
Uh
You clearly didn't think this through
If what I've been told is true (is it true?)
You'll be crawling back like boo hoo hoo
Uh

Remember all the things that you and I did first?
And now you're doing them with her
Remember all the things that you and I did first?
You got me, got me like this
Uh
And now you're taking her to every restaurant
And everywhere we went, come on!
And now you're taking her to every restaurant
You got me, got me like this
Uh

Boy you can say anything you wanna
I don't give a shh, no one else can have ya
I want you back
I want you back
Wa-want you, want you back
Uh
I broke it off thinking you'd be cryin'
Now I feel like shh looking at you flyin'
I want you back
I want you back
Wa-want you, want you back
Uh

Ohhh, I thought you'd still be mine
When I kissed you goodbye uh oh uh oh
Ohhh, and you might be with her
But I still had you first uh oh uh oh

[Astro - rap verse]
Let's go! Astro!
We used to be, but now there's a separation between you and me
Baby I'm moving on to another girl that understands me more
Dated her in front your place so you can see it all
I remember the times, when we used to bond
But I never realized that you wanted to be mine
So I gave her the ring, instead of you, nickname too
I can tell that you're upset, because it ain't you
Met a new girl, and I gave her my heart
Not noticing that you wanted me from the very start
You want me back?
We can just be friends, don't try this thing all over again
Come on

Ohhh-Oh-oh-oh
Boy you can say anything you wanna
I don't give a shh, no one else can have ya
I want you back
I want you back
Wa-want you, want you back
Uh
I broke it off thinking you'd be cryin'
Now I feel like shh looking at you flyin'
I want you back
I want you back
Wa-want you, want you back
Uh la la la la laaa

(Let me know)

Ohhh, I want you back
I want you back
Wa-want you, want you back
Uh

Ohhh, I want you back
I want you back
Wa-want you, want you back
Uh

Does this sound like a helicopter!? (bbbbbbrrrrrddddd)

" I Want U Back" represents Pip's jealousy toward Biddy's and Joe's relationship as it resulted in marriage. Pip, after being rejected by Estella, wished to marry Biddy as plan B. However, he was too late as he was shocked to find Biddy and Joe married and in love, disappointed as he expected to marry Biddy. "Not noticing that you wanted me from the very start" represents how Pip should have recognized Biddy's affection and chased her instead of endlessly chasing Estella. Yet, he was too late as " you've ( Biddy) been hanging out with that other girl ( Joe, I laughed at the irony) in town, looking like a pair of clowns clowns clowns."
I'll Make a Man Out of You- Mulan- Relationship of the Convict and Pip

Let's get down to business
To defeat the Huns
Did they send me daughters
When I asked for sons?
You're the saddest bunch
I ever met
But you can bet
Before we're through
Mister, I'll make a man
out of you

Tranquil as a forest
But on fire within
Once you find your center
you are sure to win
You're a spineless, pale
pathetic lot
And you haven't got a clue
Somehow I'll make a man
out of you

I'm never gonna catch
my breath
Say good-bye to those
who knew me
Boy, was I a fool in school
for cutting gym
This guy's got 'em
scared to death
Hope he doesn't see
right through me
Now I really wish that I
knew how to swim

(Be a man)
We must be swift as
the coursing river
(Be a man)
With all the force
of a great typhoon
(Be a man)
With all the strength
of a raging fire
Mysterious as the
dark side of the moon

Time is racing toward us
till the Huns arrive
Heed my every order
and you might survive
You're unsuited for
the rage of war
So pack up, go home
you're through
How could I make a man
out of you?

(Be a man)
We must be swift as
the coursing river
(Be a man)
With all the force
of a great typhoon
(Be a man)
With all the strength
of a raging fire
Mysterious as the
dark side of the moon

(Be a man)
We must be swift as
the Coursing river
(Be a man)
With all the force
of a great typhoon
(Be a man)
With all the strength
of a raging fire
Mysterious as the
dark side of the moon

"I'll Make a Man Out of You" is originally from the movie Mulan, when the officer of Mulan's troop makes a "man" out of the dawdling army. He works hard and strenuously to improve the troops, and eventually he succeeds to enable the men to be "swift as a coursing river" and " strong as the raging fire." While it represents the officer's effort to improve the soldiers, it can also represent the effort and struggles the Convict endured through to enable Pip to become a gentleman. The Convict, because he was moved by Pip's kindness in the marshes in the past, worked hard to gain a small fortune as a sheep rancher in Australia for solely Pip's benefit, instead of his own. It demonstrates the Convict's strength and efforts to allow Pip to become a gentleman one day.

You've Got a Friend In Me - Toy Story- Joe

You've got a friend in me
You've got a friend in me
When the road looks rough ahead
And you're miles and miles from your nice warm bed
You just remember what your old pal said
Boy, you've got a friend in me
Yeah, you've got a friend in me

You've got a friend in me
You've got a friend in me
If you got troubles
I got them too
There isn't anything
I wouldn't do for you
We stick together, we can see it through
Cause you've got a friend in me
Yeah, you've got a friend in me

Some other folks might be a little bit smarter than I am
Bigger and stronger too
Maybe
But none of them
Will ever love you
The way I do
It's me and you, boy

And as the years go by,
Our friendship will never die
You're gonna see it's our destiny
You've got a friend in me
You've got a friend in me
Yea You've got a friend in me.

The song "You've Got a Friend In Me" represents Joe's effort to be there for Pip, despite Pip's coldness to him after acquiring his status of becoming a gentleman. Even if Joe wasn't the smartest, or the biggest in influential/ wealth terms,("Some other folks might be a little bit smarter than I am. Bigger and stronger too") he was always loyal to Pip, helping him out in any way he can. For example, he cleared Pip's debts toward the end of the book when Pip was in need when he lost his high status, despite the snobby attitude Pip had toward him on his last visit. Joe is truly a "good guy" and the song represents how he will always be a friend to Pip no matter the situation.
Rolling in the Deep - Miss. Havisham and her "husband"
There's a fire starting in my heart
Reaching a fever pitch and it's bringing me out the dark
Finally I can see you crystal clear
Go 'head and sell me out and I'll lay your ship bare
See how I leave with every piece of you
Don't underestimate the things that I will do
There's a fire starting in my heart
Reaching a fever pitch and its bringing me out the dark

The scars of your love remind me of us
They keep me thinking that we almost had it all
The scars of your love they leave me breathless, I can't help feeling
We could have had it all (You're gonna wish you never had met me)
Rolling in the deep (Tears are gonna fall, rolling in the deep)
You had my heart inside of your hand (You're gonna wish you never had met me)
And you played it to the beat (Tears are gonna fall, rolling in the deep)

Baby I have no story to be told
But I've heard one on you and I'm gonna make your head burn
Think of me in the depths of your despair
Making a home down there 'cause mine sure won't be shared

The scars of your love remind me of us (You're gonna wish you never had met me)
They keep me thinking that we almost had it all (Tears are gonna fall, rolling in the deep)

We could've had it all
Rolling in the deep
You had my heart inside your hand
But you played it with a beating

Throw your soul through every open door
Count your blessings to find what you look for
Turned my sorrow into treasured gold
You pay me back in kind and reap just what you sow

(You're gonna wish you never had met me) We could've had it all
We could've had it all (Tears are gonna fall, rolling in the deep)
It all, it all, it all, (You're gonna wish you never had met me)
We could have had it all (You're gonna wish you never had met me)
Rolling in the deep (Tears are gonna fall, rolling in the deep)
You had my heart inside of your hand (You're gonna wish you never had met me)
And you played it to the beat (Tears are gonna fall, rolling in the deep)

We could've had it all (You're gonna wish you never had met me)
Rolling in the deep (Tears are gonna fall, rolling in the deep)
You had my heart inside your hand (You're gonna wish you never had met me)
But you played it, you played it, you played it, you played it
To the beat

The song "Rolling in the Deep" represents Miss. Havisham's relationship with her ex husband, how he cheated her for money. ""We could've had it all" shows how the one person in the relationship, in this case Miss. Havisham, thought it was a perfect relationship with basically a happy ending. However, that was all destroyed after her husband took all the money she had, leaving her with nothing. Also, the line " Finally I could see you crystal clear," shows Miss. Havisham's realization of the cheating of money. Basically, the griefs of Miss. Havisham are shown through the song lyrics of this heart breaker song.
Jar of Hearts- Miss. Havisham and Estella

No, I can't take one more step towards you
'Cause all that's waiting is regret
Don't you know I'm not your ghost anymore
You lost the love I loved the most

I learned to live half alive
And now you want me one more time

And who do you think you are?
Runnin' 'round leaving scars
Collecting your jar of hearts
And tearing love apart
You're gonna catch a cold
From the ice inside your soul
So don't come back for me
Who do you think you are?

I hear you're asking all around
If I am anywhere to be found
But I have grown too strong
To ever fall back in your arms

And I've learned to live half alive
And now you want me one more time

And who do you think you are?
Runnin' 'round leaving scars
Collecting your jar of hearts
And tearing love apart
You're gonna catch a cold
From the ice inside your soul
So don't come back for me
Who do you think you are?

And it took so long just to feel alright
Remember how to put back the light in my eyes
I wish I had missed the first time that we kissed
'Cause you broke all your promises
And now you're back
You don't get to get me back

And who do you think you are?
Runnin' 'round leaving scars
Collecting your jar of hearts
And tearing love apart
You're gonna catch a cold
From the ice inside your soul
So don't come back for me
Don't come back at all

And who do you think you are?
Runnin' 'round leaving scars
Collecting your jar of hearts
Tearing love apart
You're gonna catch a cold
From the ice inside your soul
Don't come back for me
Don't come back at all

Who do you think you are?

Who do you think you are?

Who do you think you are?

The song, Jar of Hearts, represents how Estella was taught by Miss. Havisham to toy with and break men's heart. The phrase, " You're gonna catch a cold, from the ice inside your soul, shows how Estella grew cold over the year, almost not knowing how to show true love toward a man due to her playing with other people's heart. She "tears love apart and collects her jar of hearts", hearts she once toyed with.
